Top 3 Benefits of Red Light Therapy Masks for Your Skin.

Red Light therapy Face Masks

I’m not one to shy away from my local cosmetic clinic, and let’s just say that they know me and I know them quite well. My regular treatment of late is the Red Light Therapy Masks.

While I don’t see anything wrong with popping in, laying down and having a delicious pampering once in a while, there is a downside, time and money.

So when I mentioned casually that I may not be in as often, my beauty therapist said I could review their at-home solution for light therapy – this piqued my interest.

I started my research and found some interesting facts about how light therapy can help.

How Red Light Therapy Masks Work.

Red Light Therapy works by using specific wavelengths that can penetrate the skin. These wavelengths, which generally come in Red and Near-Infrared (NIR) are longer compared to the other colours of the spectrum making them pass through the epidermis (the skin) to reach the dermis, which is the deeper layer. This light energy is then absorbed by the mitochondria of the cells boosting energy production.

Once the LED light starts to interact with the cells and tissues, this then stimulates a biological process and improves blood circulation, collagen production and treating skin irritations like Acne and Rosacea.

But the benefits continue. LED light therapy can help shrink the skin pore size, a little like how cold water in the Freeze Tub Portable Ice Bath can temporarily decrease pore size by constricting the blood vessels and tightening the skin surface, following on your cold plunge into an LED Light Therapy session can help ensure the pore size remains smaller for longer.

Let’s explore this new at-home, affordable treatment that could leave you looking years younger in only 10 minutes a day.

1. Improved Skin Health and Appearance.

Red Light Therapy significantly enhances skin health and appearance by stimulating Collagen production.

As we age, we naturally produce less and less collagen because the cells that are responsible for producing collagen, called fibroblasts, become less active. We also have to take into consideration hormonal changes and environmental factors which also can slow collagen production.

The existing collagen that sits within our skin can break down and weaken the skin structure providing a a negative response to our skin condition and how it outwardly appears.

Collagen is a vital protein found in almost every tissue in the body, particularly the connective tissues like our skin, muscles, ligaments and bones. One of the primary reasons collagen is so important is that helps maintain the elasticity of the tissues, when we have less of it, our tissues within the body get affected.

When collagen starts to decline in our skin, this can lead to sagging skin, particularly around the jowls of the mouth and it can represent itself with fine lines and wrinkles.

Red Light Therapy Masks can accelerate the repair and regeneration of the skin and speed up the healing process due to inflammation, acne and rosacea.

2. Improve Acne Treatment

Blue light is a safe and effective approach to helping reduce acne. LED Blue Light penetrates the upper layers reaching the sebaceous gland and killing the bacteria responsible for causing a breakout.

P. acnes, or its technical term Propionibacterium acnes lives on the surface of the skin and also in the oil glands. If you tend to have oily skin, then P. acnes can thrive in this type of environment leading to an excess amount of bacteria.

This can then lead to minor inflammation of the skin forming acne lesions like pimples and blackheads.

Blue light therapy targets bacteria generating reactive oxygen that slowly decreases the bacteria while not harming the delicate biochemistry of the surface of the skin. Dr Whitney Bowe, Board Certified Dermatologist and acne specialist said ‘Blue Light has antimicrobial properties that kill bacteria and reduce inflammation”.

10 minutes a day 4 to 5 times per week and you will start to see less and less irritation of the skin and a decrease in new acne forming. Blue light also soothes the skin surface and improves skin clarity.

3. Short and Sweet

Often any cosmetic clinic appointment takes time, and in today’s world – time is precious. As much as heading into the clinic and having a relaxing facial, we don’t go as often as we’d like, time and money being the primary reason for holding us back.

Red Light Therapy Masks offer a solution where you can get all the relaxing qualities that a clinic-led appointment would provide but primarily, the cost-saving measures home LED masks provide.

Any clinic appointment would generally take 30 to 60 minutes, not taking into consideration the drive and cost.

At home, you’re free to use your LED device at any time, it takes 10 to 15 minutes, and you can use it when you’re reading, watching TV or on the computer. Plus, you’re often using it several times per week.

Seeing your beauty therapist 3 to 4 times per week is seen as a luxury, which is why LED face masks are becoming a sought-after at-home solution.

Important Points to Consider

We recommend not going with the very cheap LED face masks, as the quality of the LED bulbs is of lesser quality, and the material that the bulbs are placed into may not last. We’ll be following up here with further information on the LED bulbs themselves in a later article, but the range for good quality LED Face masks sits between $200 to $600.

Often, the only difference here is the brand name, and potentially the controller.

Brands tend to make you ‘believe’ that a good brand would spend more on their product than others, and in some cases (and products) yes, that is the case, but with our research on LED Masks, there is very little difference between the $250 LED Mask and the $600 LED Mask. There may be more LEDs in some masks than others, but the output is often the same.

Additionally, you might see some wireless controller options with a few additional features, like a built-in timer, but if you’re not concerned about that and want to get a benefit from LED Light Therapy from home and save some money while you’re at it, then use your smartwatch as a timer instead.

To Conclude

Red Light Therapy Face Masks have become paired with some of the most common solutions from home to help with a variety of skin conditions to improve skin appearance and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

The industry has been back with a significant amount of scientific research and real-life cases. A recent study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and the National Library of Medicine found that regular use of LED Face masks improved skin texture reduced fine lines and increased skin hydration.

Not only a cost-saving measure but an easy, safer solution in the search for softer, healthy, younger-looking skin.
